With the fast 3G connection, now it is totally possible to listen to streamed music on your Iphone. Couple of applications like AOL Radio and Pandora are already available in the App Store.

Particularly, kudos for Pandora which is providing a great user experience with its native Iphone Application. Designed to provided the key features on the Iphone, it allows you to create your personalized radio stations through a very intuitive user interface. Also, users can rate musics helping Pandora to filter even better the type of music you like.

As a user, I missed the lyrics while the music is playing. It would be a nice little add on. The application is free and requires you to register on their website to create a user account.

There is something about radios that I like a lot. You don’t know what is going to play next. Because of that, I’ve been listening to my Pandora radios more than my iPod music!

Check it out!

Netshare from Nullriver can be qualified as one of the first real “killer”  applications available for the Iphone.

Available? Yes you are right. I don’t think it is anymore. This application was available in the App Store for a day, than it was removed from the App store for a while, later listed again in the Store and finally its been removed from the App Store once more!!!

The issue is that Netshare allows you to browse the Internet from your computer using your Iphone Internet connection. It is very cool, since with the 3G, the connection speed is very reasonable and there is no need for a cable between the Iphone and the computer.

The Iphone contract with AT&T does not allow you to do it though. It violates AT&T’s terms of service for the Iphone. AT&T typically charges around $30 per month for tethering services.

Netshare was available for a one time price of $10.00 and may never be available again. I hope it comes back and AT&T resolves their contract issues with it. The application is really useful.

You can always check this link though to see if the application is back to the store.

G-Spot is a great example on how to add value to your applications with the device location information. The application, created by In2itiveMinds, offers some interesting functionalities, all based on your position.

  • A Compass – The compass shows where you are heading to. The faster you go, the better the accuracy gets.
  • Spot Me – A shortcut to pin point your current location using Google Maps. It keeps track of your most recent locations
  • Share – In a single click you can send an email sharing your current location. This can be very handy.
  • Info – Provides latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, speed, accuracy, date and time of the most recent location update.
G-Spot is cool, makes a good use of the location information, but can you imagine what other applications could do with location?! Infinite possibilities.

PosiMotion has a very interesting position in the mobile application marketplace. Besides developing applications to the Iphone platform, mainly location based apps, the company has also launched a Publishing Program, G-Minds, to assist developers to successfully achieve their goals with their new applications.

According to PosiMotion website, “G-Minds helps developers reach their target customers in the online store where iPhone users.”

Here is the list of benefits listed on their website:

Features & Benefits
  • PosiMotion has been pre-certified by Apple to test applications and distribute them on Apple’s App Store.
  • PosiMotion is one of the limited groups of developers/publishers selected to participate in the launch of Apple’s iTunes App Store.
  • PosiMotion handles all App Store compliance.
  • Developers share in the revenue generated from sales of their applications via Apple’s App Store.
  • Developers will recieve credit for their work on both our advertised site and Apple’s App Store.
  • PosiMotion provides detailed monthly reports to all developers.
  • PosiMotion includes marketing services on a global scale for all published applications.
  • PosiMotion fine tunes the aesthetics of your application to a professional level.

Apparently, Apple has granted access to sell in the App Store to only a select few companies from the more than 25,000 applicants, and this program may help to increase your changes to pass “Apple Clearance” to get your app in the App Store ;-)

I would like to break the sequence here to talk about a very important subject.

LOCATION BASED SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS

I’ve been using and researching extensively the first wave of applications for the IPhone and I notice something important. Seems to me that there is a lack of applications using smartly the Location information provided by the device. May be the reason is that this possibility is brand new for majority of the developers, but the fact is that we don’t have applications using this ability smartly enough. There are so many great innovations that can be done in many different fields of application, but seems like we will need to wait for the second wave to check them.

Exceptions for this first wave of applications are, Loopt and G-Spot for example. These two are great examples of the innovations that can be done using mobile location information, and I will be writing about these two next at Iphonewinds.

Just to think a little bit about the possibilities, imagine what can be achieved with games using location…

Facebook

25Jul08

It is simple, easy to navigate and provides the main functions you would like to use  when on the move. Facebook has already launched its native Iphone app and did a  a great job. You can check a simpler version of your profile, your latest feed, your list of friends and their respective photos and  also send Facebook emails to them.

What is also really cool is that it brought to the mobile world the chat application, which allows you to chat with your friends on the fly, showing which friends are available for chatting. It is cool because the main chat applications out there are still not available for the IPhone, including the iChat from Apple.

You should expect the Facebook future app versions to use specific Iphone resources like the location and microphone interfaces to bring unique functions only available when on the go.

This application is available for FREE and is a must for the Facebook Iphone users!

Shazam

24Jul08

When you first use this application, you will have the feeling of what kind of applications is being developed for you in this new mobile world of possibilities. Shazam, developed by Shazam Entertainment Ltd., will help you out when you are listening to music and you would like to know who is singing.

Just run the application, tap the “tag now” button and after a few seconds, Shazam will tell you the artist and the track name. It is impressive and accurate. I’ve used hundred of times and it gives you the right answer almost all the time.

In my user experience, it failed when either there was too much noise (people speaking) or the music had no lyrics. That is right, apparently if you are listening to opera for instance, it will not recognize the music.

Shazam is currently listed as a FREE application in the Apple App Store and you should give it a try!
